Office on Aging - Healthier Living Workshops

Welcome! We are pleased to present several reputable and effective evidence-based health promotion programs to meet the needs of Orange County’s older adults and caregivers. Learn more about our interactive and engaging workshops below!

What Workshops Are Being Offered?

  • Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP)
  • Diabetes Self-Management Program (DSMP)
  • A Matter of Balance (AMOB)

What Are Some of the Workshop Features?

  • Weekly Sessions for 6 or 8 weeks
    • AMOB : 2-hour sessions for 8 weeks
    • CDSMP and DSMP : 2.5-hour sessions for 6 weeks
  • Small group sessions led by knowledgeable peer leaders
  • FREE! There is no cost for participation

Who Can Participate?

  • Adults aged 60 and older
  • The spouse of an older adult participating in the program, regardless of age
  • Caregivers under the age of 60 who bring an older adult to the class can stay with the older adult to assist with activities if needed.

What Can I Gain From These Workshops?

  • A sense of empowerment of being in charge of your health
  • Learn behavior management skills such as weekly goal setting and problem solving skills
  • Learn how to improve communication with physicians, family, and friends

Healthier Living with Chronic Disease Self-Management Program- Do you have a chronic condition? CDSMP is to help people improve their health behaviors through exercise, cognitive symptom management, coping and. communication to help improve their health status. In the CDSMP workshop participants can share common concerns and problems to help manage their lives and emotions to become better self-managers.

Healthier Living with Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (CDSMP)
Note: This workshop will take place in-person, registration is required by February 7, 2025.

A Matter of Balance is an 8-session structured group intervention that strategizes to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels. Participants learn to view falls and fear of falling as controllable, set realistic goals to increase activity, change their environment to reduce fall risk factors, and exercise to increase strength and balance. This program consists of group discussion; strength, balance, & flexibility exercises during sessions 3-8, and a Guest Health Care Professional (GHP) visit to demonstrate safe techniques for getting down to the ground and getting up from a fall.
